High
linguistic requirements for office
In the U.S., candidates of both parties like to break
out their Spanish. Remember Christopher Dodd’s Spanish dialogue with an
audience member during one of the early debates? George W. Bush also lets
loose with español from time to time, although his command of the
language leaves much to be desired.
Well, according to sources in Malaysia, the next leader of that
country will have to be fluent in three languages: English, Bahasa
Malaysia, and Mandarin. How many politicians in the U.S. can speak three
languages? Not many, I would guess.
