Although
I have generally tended to vote Republican, I am a relative liberal on
social issues, and not a hard-core partisan by any stretch.
Early in
the primary season, I liked a number of candidates from both parties: Ron
Paul, Joseph Biden & Rudy Giuliani.
The
problem is: all my guys got creamed by the time the Florida primary came
around. (And let’s be honest, here---neither Ron Paul nor Joseph Biden
ever had a snowball’s chance in…..) So now it looks like we’re going to be
facing President Hillary, President McCain, or President Obama this time
next year.
A few
observations:
The
sudden warming between Hillary and Obama that we saw at the debate this
past Thursday was calculated. The Democratic leadership wants voters to
get used to the idea of a Hillary-Obama or Obama-Hillary ticket. (That
would be a tough one for the GOP to beat, too.)
Rudi
was swooning like a teenage girl at an ‘N Sync concert when he endorsed
McCain the other day. My guess: Rudi is bucking hard to be McCain’s VP.
(Don’t look for a McCain-Romney pairing; it’s very clear that the animus
between those two goes way beyond standard political rivalries.
I still
don’t understand the appeal of John McCain. Yes, I respect his Vietnam
service record. McCain would make a great secretary of defense. But for
the top spot, McCain lacks the technical expertise (what he derides as
“management.”) We need a president who can rally our fighting spirit;
but we also need a commander-in-chief who understands the economy.
