You know you’re getting old when you no longer enjoy
the music that college students and teenagers are listening to. For me,
that happened about ten years ago when everything turned into rap, and
every song on the radio was about pimpin’ this or gang-banging that. An
emphatic “no thanks” from this quarter.
For me the best decade for music was the 1980s. I
feel sorry for anyone brought up on the idea that what 50 Cent and Snoop
Dog are producing is somehow vaguely similar to music.
With an eye toward correcting this cultural
downslide, I will occasionally use this space to introduce some quality
music from a bygone era.
Here is Triumph’s “Fight the Good Fight,” originally
released around 1982. Nothing bling-bling about these guys. No references
to bitches, hoes, or altercations with local law enforcement. A positive
message without being preachy.
